Caring for High Quality Wood Furniture

Posted on February 26th, 2020 by Indian River Furniture.

Quality wood furniture is something to be treasured. If cared for properly, it can last a lifetime. However, even the highest quality wood can become scraped or scratched. When purchasing any type of furniture, it is always helpful to ask for specific cleaning and care instructions. Here are a few tips to keep your wood furniture in mint condition:

Protect Wood Furniture

Always use coasters when placing glasses or mugs down on wood tables to avoid rings and heat damage. Use a trivet or potholder if you must place hot food onto a wood table. Protect your dining room table from food and drink spills by using placemats or a tablecloth.

Keep It Clean

If your furniture still isn’t as clean as you would like it to be after dusting, you may want to take further measures to clean it. Never use all-purpose cleaners as they can cause damage to the finish. If there is a certain troublesome spot on the furniture, dip a cloth in water that contains a mild dish detergent, wring it out, and wipe the area. Rinse with a damp cloth containing only water, then wipe it dry immediately with a soft cloth.

Wear & Tear

If your wood furniture has nicks and scratches, try using a liquid polish to hide the abrasions. If the damage is more serious, you may need to take more drastic measures. Painting a piece of damaged furniture can add a few years onto its useful life, or you can even sand and re-stain it.

Environmental Damage

Sunlight, heat, and other environmental factors can cause damage to your wood. Your valuable wood furniture should not be placed in front of fireplaces, vents, or uncovered windows. The light and heat can fade the wood.

Tough Stains

Life happens, and sometimes your wood furniture gets a stain or two. Clean it as quickly as possible; the longer it sets, the more it will set and be harder to remove. If your wood has experienced water damage resulting in dark spots, gently blot the stain with a cloth soaked in vinegar. For white rings from wet glasses, mix a paste of equal amounts white toothpaste and baking soda. Rub it into the stain until it is done, then wipe off the furniture and buff it with a dry cloth. For crayon marks, put mayonnaise on the marked area, let it sit for a few minutes, then rub it clean with a damp cloth and buff with a dry cloth.
